Ridesharing
Ridesharing services have reshaped urban transportation. We examine how they have also affected alcohol consumption and traffic crashes.
We study how access to ridesharing affects people’s behavior and health outcomes, including their use of space, risks for injury, and alcohol consumption. The impacts are mixed. Using data from Chicago, New York, New Jersey, and around the US, we’ve found that ridesharing reduces drunk driver crashes and that subsidized ridesharing can be used as part of a targeted strategy to reduce crash incidence. But ridesharing is also associated with increased pedestrian crashes and assaults.
